No hot water, a tank dripping in the garage, or a heater that has simply worn out: Plumber 24 Fort Worth handles water heater repair, water heater installation and replacement, and boiler service across Fort Worth from 955 N Sylvania Ave in Riverside. Use this page to find the right service and learn what the city requires when a heater is replaced.

Two local conditions matter here. Fort Worth's hard water leaves scale and sediment inside tanks and tankless heat exchangers. And many 1920s–60s houses in Riverside, Oakhurst, Six Points, Northside and Fairmount have the heater squeezed into a closet, garage or attic, sometimes still connected to old galvanized pipe.

Leaking or no hot water right now?

Smell gas near the water heater? Leave the building first. Don't flip switches, light anything or try to relight the pilot. From outside, call 911 or Atmos Energy, then call us.

If the tank is leaking, do this while you call (817) 755-5621:

  1. Close the cold-water valve on the pipe at the top of the heater. If it won't turn, shut off the main valve at the house or in the meter box.
  2. Cut the heat. On an electric heater, switch off its breaker. On a heater with a pilot, turn the control knob to "pilot" (only if you don't smell gas).
  3. Call us. Office hours 8 AM–11 PM daily · 24/7 emergency service. For an active leak or water you can't shut off, we send our on-call plumber right away, at any hour.

No hot water but nothing leaking? Call and we'll book the visit at a time that suits you. Our emergency plumbing page explains what counts as an emergency.

Which water heater service do you need?

Water heater repair

For a heater that still holds water but isn't working right: no hot water, hot water that runs out fast, popping or rumbling from sediment, a dripping temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve, a leaking drain valve, or a pilot or igniter that won't stay lit. A T&P valve that keeps dripping often points to high pressure; see water pressure repair. Tank flushing for sediment is part of our maintenance and repairs service.

Water heater installation and replacement

For a tank leaking from the body or bottom (a tank can't be patched), rusty hot water from inside the tank, repeated breakdowns, or a heater that can't keep up with the household. The installation page covers sizing, code items and our $150-off water heater coupon.

Boilers

For hot-water heating systems that warm the house through radiators or baseboard: leaks, pressure problems, noises, poor circulation and rooms that won't heat.

Calling it a boiler? In Mexican Spanish, “boiler” is a common word for a water heater, along with “calentador.” If you mean the tank that heats water for showers and sinks, start with water heater repair or installation.

For restaurants, shops and rental property, see commercial plumbing, which covers commercial water heaters.

Tank or tankless?

A tank heater stores hot water and can run out during a long run of showers. A tankless heater warms water as it flows, so it doesn't run out, and it mounts on a wall to free up closet space. Switching is rarely a simple swap: a gas tankless unit often needs a larger gas line and new venting, and Fort Worth's hard water means regular descaling. See water heater installation for the full comparison and gas line installation for the piping. If you ever smell gas, leave the building first and call 911 or Atmos Energy from outside.

Fort Worth requires a permit to replace a water heater

The City of Fort Worth requires a plumbing permit to replace a water heater, even when the new unit is the same type and size as the old one, and the permitted work is inspected. Older Fort Worth houses sometimes need code items brought up to date at replacement time, such as a drain pan, a thermal expansion tank or a properly routed T&P discharge pipe. Our installation page covers these items, and you can ask us about the permit when you call.

Water Heaters FAQ

Do I need a permit to switch from a tank to a tankless water heater in Fort Worth?

Yes. The City of Fort Worth requires a plumbing permit to replace a water heater, even like-for-like, and that includes a switch from tank to tankless. Our water heater installation page explains the tankless option, including the venting and piping changes it may need.

Can a leaking water heater be fixed, or does it need replacing?

It depends where the water is coming from. A leak at a pipe fitting, the drain valve or the T&P relief valve can usually be repaired. A leak from the tank body or bottom means the heater needs replacing, because a tank can't be patched. Either way, close the cold-water valve at the top of the heater and call (817) 755-5621. For an active leak, our 24/7 emergency service sends the on-call plumber right away.

What is the difference between a water heater and a boiler?

A water heater heats the water for your taps, showers and appliances. A boiler heats water that circulates through radiators or baseboard to warm the house. If you're not sure which you have, tell us what the unit does when you call and we'll point you to the right service.

My water heater is in the attic or a closet of an older Fort Worth house. Does that change anything?

It can. Newer high-efficiency tanks are often taller or wider than the old one, so a tight closet or attic is measured before a replacement heater is ordered. An attic heater should sit in a drain pan piped away from the ceiling, and some older houses still have galvanized pipe at the heater, which we check at the same visit.

Do you have coupons for water heater work?

Yes. We offer $150 off a new water heater and a $0 dispatch fee with a repair, plus $50 off for new customers and 10% off for seniors, military and first responders. Terms are on our coupons page.
