Benbrook's homes, decade by decade
Benbrook was settled in the 1850s but stayed tiny until after World War II. The city incorporated in 1947, the year the Army Corps of Engineers started building Benbrook Dam on the Clear Fork of the Trinity; the lake began filling in 1952. The population went from 617 in 1950 to 19,564 in 1990, so much of the town was built from the 1950s through the 1980s. Pipe usually matches the build year:
- 1950s and 1960s: galvanized steel supply pipe that closes up with rust, and original cast-iron drains.
- 1970s and 1980s: cast-iron or early plastic drains and copper supply, with gray polybutylene in some homes finished from the late 1970s into the mid-1990s.
- Newer homes: plastic pipe; calls are mostly water heaters, valves and fixtures.
Water, sewer and permits in Benbrook
The Benbrook Water Authority (BWA), not Fort Worth Water, runs Benbrook's public water and sewer. The Texas Legislature created BWA in 1955 for that one job. BWA treats Benbrook Lake water at its own plant, adds well water, and can draw on Fort Worth's system in an emergency. Fort Worth treats Benbrook's sewage under contract at its Village Creek plant.
- Bills, meters and street breaks belong to BWA; its number is on your bill.
- Sewer backups: call BWA right away so a crew can confirm the blockage isn't in the BWA-owned part of the line before you pay anyone. If the clog is in your private line, call us at any hour; we clear it, usually through the clean-out in the yard.
- Septic: parts of Benbrook still use septic tanks, and BWA expects many to join its sewer as they fail. We build the private line from the house; see drain installation and replacement.
- Water Watch: on August 4, 2026, BWA's board declared a voluntary Stage 1 Water Watch; check BWA for the current stage. Running toilets and hidden leaks waste water around the clock; see toilet repairs and leak detection.
Permits are the city's, not Fort Worth's: Benbrook's Building Permits and Inspections department works from the 2018 International Plumbing Code with local amendments, which the city lists as in effect as of January 3, 2019. The plumber doing the work pulls the permit. Plumbers must also register their state license with the City of Benbrook.
Common plumbing jobs in Benbrook
- Old cast iron. Scale snags paper and roots work into cracks. When several drains slow at once, drain cleaning and a camera inspection come first, then sewer line repair if needed.
- Water heaters. Rust, a puddle at the base or showers going lukewarm call for repair or a new heater.
- Hidden leaks. A warm floor spot or a meter that turns with every tap closed points to slab leak or water line repair.
- Tired supply pipe. Galvanized pipe that kills pressure or polybutylene that splits usually ends in repiping.
- Freeze damage. The February 2021 storm burst pipes across the Fort Worth area; see frozen pipes.
What to do in a plumbing emergency
- Close the main shutoff at the house, or the customer shutoff in the meter box if your home has one.
- Call (817) 755-5621 with your street and the nearest big road, such as Benbrook Boulevard.
- We send our on-call plumber right away (see emergency plumbing).
- Water running down the street or pavement buckling? Report it to BWA too; main breaks are theirs to fix.
Smell gas? Leave the building first. Don't flip switches or light anything. Once outside, call 911 or Atmos Energy, then call us about gas line repair.

Benbrook plumbing questions
Who supplies water in Benbrook?
+
The Benbrook Water Authority, an independent district created in 1955 that also runs the sewer. Your bill, your meter and breaks in the street go to BWA; pipes on your side of the meter are the repairs we handle.
My sewer is backing up. Should I call BWA or a plumber?
+
Call BWA first so a crew can rule out its part of the line. If the clog is in your private line or inside the house, call us at any hour and we send our on-call plumber right away.
Does plumbing work in Benbrook need a permit?
+
Many jobs do. Benbrook's Building Permits and Inspections department issues them under the 2018 International Plumbing Code with local amendments, and the plumber doing the work pulls the permit.
My house is on septic. Can it be connected to the sewer?
+
Ask BWA first whether sewer service reaches your lot and what it requires. After that, the private sewer line from your house to the connection is plumbing work we do.
Can I get emergency service at night in Benbrook?
+
Yes. Office hours 8 AM–11 PM daily · 24/7 emergency service. For a burst pipe, sewage coming up a drain or water you can't shut off, call any time and we send our on-call plumber right away.
