A leaking drain is a different problem from a clogged one. Drain cleaning clears what's inside the pipe; drain repair fixes the pipe itself: a loose slip joint, a cracked or rusted P-trap, a rust-through spot in cast iron, or a run that has sagged and holds water. We handle drain repair and drain pipe repair across Fort Worth.

Our shop is at 955 N Sylvania Ave in Riverside. Much of the housing in Riverside, Oakhurst and Six Points was built between the 1920s and the 1960s, and its original cast iron and galvanized drains have had decades to rust, so a leak there is often a rust-through spot or a seeping old joint. Newer PVC and ABS drains don't rust, but they can crack, pull apart at a joint or sag.

Water coming through a ceiling or wall? A drain only leaks while water goes down it, so stop using the fixtures on that line. If water is near a light, outlet or switch, turn that circuit off at the breaker and don't touch anything wet. Sewage coming up? Call (817) 755-5621 for 24/7 emergency service.

Signs a drain pipe needs repair

  • Water in the sink cabinet, or a swollen, soft cabinet floor
  • Drips from the P-trap that appear only while the sink drains
  • A ceiling stain under an upstairs bathroom, or damp drywall behind a tub or toilet
  • Dripping, wet soil or a musty smell in a pier-and-beam crawlspace
  • A drain that slows again soon after cleaning, often a sign of a sag or broken section

Drain repairs we handle

P-traps, slip joints and tailpieces

Slip-nut washers flatten and crack with age, and a bumped nut works loose. Older metal traps rust through at the bottom of the bend, where water always sits. We reseal sound joints and replace a trap, tailpiece or trap arm that's cracked, corroded or out of line with the wall pipe, because a joint forced into place keeps leaking. Sink, strainer or faucet problem? See sink repair.

Cracked or separated plastic drain pipe

PVC and ABS can crack at an overtightened fitting or where a floor has moved, and a poorly seated glued joint can let go years later. We cut out the damaged piece, splice in new pipe and test every joint.

Cast iron and galvanized drains

Cast iron rusts from the inside, and the bottom of a horizontal run goes first. A rust-through spot often starts as a weep or rust crust before it opens into a hole, and old lead-and-oakum hub joints can seep too. If the pipe on both sides is still solid, we cut out the bad section and join new pipe with no-hub couplings. Galvanized sink and vent lines in mid-century homes rust the same way; we usually replace failed sections with PVC.

Sagging drain lines

A drain needs a steady downhill slope. When hangers fail or the ground under a buried line settles, a section can sag, hold water and catch waste, so the drain keeps clogging. Under pier-and-beam houses, common in Fairmount, we can often re-hang and re-slope the line from the crawlspace. Under a slab or yard, North Texas clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, shifting pipe over time, so we find the sag with a video camera inspection before opening anything up.

How a drain repair visit works

  1. Find the source. We run water and watch where it drips; for hidden pipe, a camera shows the inside of the line.
  2. Explain the options. You hear the cause and the repair-or-replace options before work starts.
  3. Make the repair. A new trap or washers, a spliced section, new couplings or a re-hung run.
  4. Test it. We run water through every fixture on that line and check each joint.

Repair or replace the drain?

Repair makes sense when the damage is in one place: one trap, one joint, or one cracked section with solid pipe on both sides. Replacement is usually the better spend when:

  • the camera shows heavy scale, cracks or thin walls along much of the line
  • the line has leaked in several spots, or each repair leads to another nearby
  • the sag runs the whole length of the pipe
  • old cast iron or galvanized pipe sits in walls already open for a remodel

Drain repair FAQ

How much does drain repair cost in Fort Worth?

It depends on what failed and how we reach it. A new P-trap is a small job; a cracked section inside a wall or under a floor or slab takes more work. We explain the options before work starts, and our coupons include a $0 dispatch fee with a repair (terms on our coupons page).

Why does my sink leak only when the water is draining?

Because the drain pipe is empty until water runs through it. A drip that appears only while the sink drains points to the P-trap, the slip joints or the tailpiece. A drip that never stops is more likely the faucet or a water supply line.

Can a cast iron drain be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If the pipe around a rust-through spot or crack is still solid, a short new section held by two no-hub couplings fixes it. If the pipe is thin and flaking along most of its length, replacement is the better spend. A camera inspection shows which one you have.

Is a leaking drain an emergency?

A slow drip under a sink usually isn't: stop using that fixture, set a pan under the trap and book a repair during office hours, 8 AM to 11 PM every day. Water through a ceiling or sewage backing up into a tub or floor drain can't wait: call (817) 755-5621 for 24/7 emergency service.
