What we run new gas lines to

• Ranges and cooktops. Switching from electric usually means a new line and a shut-off valve behind the range.
• Dryers. A line to the laundry room with its own shut-off.
• Standby generators. A dedicated line sized for the generator's full load. The electrical hookup is separate work for an electrician.
• Outdoor kitchens and fire pits. A buried line to a built-in grill or fire pit, ending in a shut-off you can reach. Propane fire pits must be converted for natural gas first.
• Tankless water heaters. A whole-house unit burns far more gas than a tank heater, so the old line is often too small. See water heater installation.
• Fireplaces, extensions and relocations. Gas logs, a range moved in a remodel, or piping to an addition.

Why you can't always tap the old pipe

Every gas appliance has a BTU rating on its label. The pipe must carry the total load of everything that may run at once, over the full run, without pressure dropping too low. An undersized line shows up as a tankless heater throwing error codes on cold mornings.

Many homes in Riverside, Oakhurst, Six Points and Fairmount date from the 1920s to the 1960s, and their original black iron gas piping was often sized for just a furnace, a tank water heater and a range. Adding a tankless heater or generator often means a new, larger line from the meter, sized to code after we check the existing pipe and measure the run.

Pipe and routing in Fort Worth homes

• Black iron. Rigid threaded steel for exposed runs, garages and tie-ins to older systems.
• CSST. Flexible stainless tubing with fewer joints. It must be bonded to the home's electrical grounding to lower lightning risk.
• Polyethylene yard pipe. For buried runs, laid with a tracer wire so it can be found later.

North Texas clay swells when wet and shrinks in drought, so buried lines need the right depth and bedding. Texas811 must mark buried utilities before any digging. Slab homes usually get new lines through the attic; pier-and-beam houses, common in Fairmount, often allow a route through the crawlspace.

How the installation works

1. Tell us what you're adding. Call or text the model or a photo of its rating label.
2. Site check and sizing. We check the meter, existing piping and route, then size the pipe.
3. Permit. New gas piping in Fort Worth generally needs a plumbing permit through the city's Development Services department.
4. Install. Pipe and fittings go in, with a shut-off valve at each appliance and a sediment trap where code requires one.
5. Pressure test and inspection. The capped piping must hold air pressure for the time the city requires while the inspector checks the work.
6. Connect and light. We connect the appliance, purge the line, leak-check the joints and confirm it runs properly.

Atmos Energy and your meter

Atmos Energy owns the meter and the service line up to it; the piping on the house side is the homeowner's, and that's what we install. A large added load, like a generator or whole-house tankless heater, can exceed what the current meter supplies, and only Atmos can change the meter. We flag that during sizing so the request to Atmos goes in early. If the gas is shut off at the meter for the work, the city releases the line to Atmos after inspection and Atmos turns the gas on.
