Signs the problem is your main sewer line

One slow sink is usually a fixture clog. Trouble in several places at once points to the main line:

A waterproof sewer camera goes in through a cleanout or a pulled toilet, and you see the footage too. For a repair, it answers the questions that set scope and price:

• What the pipe is made of
• How many problem spots there are: one bad joint or trouble along the whole run
• How far each one is from the house, so digging happens in the right place

Clay pipe and tree roots

Clay sewer pipe went in as short lengths, so an old yard line has many joints. Roots from mature trees work into any joint that seeps; cutting them clears the pipe, but they grow back into the same joint until that section is repaired.

Buried cast iron

Cast iron yard lines corrode over decades: heavy scale, cracks along the pipe, a bottom worn through. Once the line has rusted through in several places, replacing it usually beats chasing one failure at a time.

Bellies from shifting clay soil

North Texas expansive clay swells after heavy rain and shrinks in a dry summer. Over time that movement pushes joints out of line or lets pipe settle into a low spot where solids sit, so clogs return until the section is re-laid with proper fall.

Sewer line repair or replacement: how we decide

The footage, the pipe's material and the number of problem spots decide it:

• Spot repair. One bad joint, crack or root entry point, with the rest of the line sound. We dig at that spot and replace the damaged piece.
• Section replacement. A belly or a run of bad joints, replaced and set at the correct slope.
• Full sewer line replacement. Roots or cracks at joint after joint, widespread rust or repeated collapses. A new line runs from the house to the city connection.

We'll tell you plainly when a spot repair would only be the first of several, or when the line just needs cleaning.

What happens on a sewer line job

1. Inspect. The camera locates the problem.
2. Explain the options. We go over repair or replacement and the cost. Before any digging, buried utility lines are marked through 811.
3. Repair or replace. Damaged pipe comes out; new pipe goes in at the correct slope.
4. Test and backfill. Water runs through to check the repair, then the trench is filled.

Your sewer line or the city's?

The private line from your house is the owner's to maintain; the public main is the city's. Where one ends can vary, so ask the City of Fort Worth if a problem sits near the property line.
