Undermount vs. drop-in: match the sink to the countertop

Drop-in (top-mount) sinks

The rim sits on top of the counter, so a drop-in works with laminate, tile, butcher block or stone. In an existing counter, the new rim has to cover the old cutout, so measure the opening, not the old sink, before you buy.

Undermount sinks

Fixed below a stone, quartz or solid-surface top, an undermount sink has no rim to catch crumbs. The edge of the opening shows, so it has to be cut and finished, which is why standard laminate usually takes a drop-in. In an existing granite top, the new sink has to fit the current cutout, because the opening can't be made smaller.

Farmhouse, vessel and pedestal sinks

An apron-front sink needs a cabinet made for it or a sink base cut down to fit, and a heavy fireclay or cast-iron bowl needs support underneath. A vessel bowl needs a tall deck faucet or a wall-mounted one. Pedestal and wall-mounted sinks leave the pipes on show, so they need to be neat and centered.

Replacing countertops? Plan the sink first

At the sink, the order of work matters most:

1. Pick the sink and faucet before the top is templated. The fabricator needs the sink model, often the sink itself, to cut the opening, plus the faucet's hole count and spacing.
2. Check the cabinet. The bowl, a disposal and any water filter all have to fit underneath.
3. Disconnect before tear-out. We disconnect the faucet, drain, disposal and dishwasher and confirm the stop valves close, so the old top comes off without a leak.
4. Set the top. On many jobs the countertop installer mounts an undermount sink with the top. Let the adhesive cure before the sink is loaded.
5. Hook up and test. We connect the supplies, drain, trap, disposal and dishwasher drain, then run hot and cold and check every joint.

Adding a garbage disposal with your new sink

Most kitchen sinks take a disposal in a standard drain opening. Check three things first:

• Space: the disposal hangs below the bowl, so a deep sink in a shallow cabinet may leave no room for it or the trap.
• Power: it needs an outlet or hardwired circuit under the sink and a switch. If there's none, plan that electrical work before install day.
• Dishwasher: the drain hose needs a high loop or air gap, as the manufacturer and local code require.

Older Fort Worth homes: what changes when the sink does

Much of the housing in Riverside, Oakhurst, Six Points, Northside and Fairmount was built before the 1960s, and the plumbing behind the sink may be decades old. Plan for these before the new sink arrives:

• Drain height: a deeper bowl or a new disposal can drop the trap below the drain opening in the wall. Then the drain arm has to be lowered, sometimes through the wall. See drain installation and replacement.
• Wall-hung bathroom sinks: a vanity or pedestal in place of an old wall-hung sink may need the supply and drain stubs moved to suit it, plus a wall patch where the old bracket was.
• Old stop valves: the new supply lines need valves that close. Seized multi-turn valves on galvanized stubs are best swapped while the sink is out, and badly rusted galvanized pipe may call for repiping.
• Pier-and-beam floors: common in Fairmount, they bring the pipes up from the crawlspace, so moving a sink is usually simpler than on a slab.

When a new sink makes sense

Replace the sink when the basin is cracked, enamel is chipped through to rust, an undermount keeps pulling loose, new countertops are going in, or you want a deeper bowl or a disposal. If the leak comes from a valve, trap or seal, a repair is usually the simpler fix.
