How a gas job runs in Fort Worth

Atmos Energy, the gas utility here, owns the meter; the pipe after it, buried yard line included, is the owner's to maintain, and Atmos advises having a licensed plumber or qualified contractor inspect and repair it. The City of Fort Worth's Development Services department issues permits and inspects the work.

  1. Permit. Gas piping jobs generally require a city permit; the plumber doing the work pulls the permit.
  2. Work and test. The piping is capped and pressurized on a gauge that has to hold steady.
  3. Inspection. A city inspector reviews the piping and the test.
  4. Gas on. If the meter was off, Atmos restores service after city approval, and each appliance is lit and checked.

Burying a line? Call 811 at least two business days before anyone digs. Texas law requires the call before powered digging 16 inches or deeper. Those marks show utility-owned lines only, not your own gas pipe.

Texas plumbing license

License note: Our gas work is done under Texas plumbing license # M-27587, issued through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Ask for the license number before anyone works on your gas piping.

Old pipe in the neighborhoods around our shop

Our shop is on North Sylvania Avenue in Riverside, and many of the houses we visit there, in Six Points and on the Northside, have stood for decades. Gas pipe in houses that old was sized for the appliances of its day, and many owners have added to it piece by piece since. Add a tankless heater or generator and the far appliances can starve. Rust and ground that shifts between wet and dry spells also open slow leaks in buried pipe.

Gas line questions

Who fixes a gas leak between the meter and my house?

Your plumber does. Atmos Energy owns the meter, but Atmos says the piping from its meter to your home is yours to maintain, including any buried yard line. A licensed plumber finds and repairs the leak, and the repair is tested before the gas goes back on.

Does gas work in Fort Worth need a permit?

In general, yes. Development Services issues the permit, and the piping must pass a pressure test and city inspection before it goes into use. After the inspection passes, the city releases the job so Atmos can turn the gas on.

Do you run gas lines for restaurants and other businesses?

Yes. Kitchens in the Stockyards, on the Near Southside, downtown and along West 7th run fryers and ranges that need a large, properly sized supply. See our restaurant gas line page.

Can you come out for a gas problem at night?

Yes. If you smell gas, leave the building first without flipping switches or lighting anything, and call 911 or Atmos Energy from outside. Then call us at any hour: gas leaks fall under our 24/7 emergency service and we send our on-call plumber right away. New lines and hookups are booked at a time that suits you.
