A disposal that hums, won't turn on or leaks at the top can usually be repaired. One that leaks from the bottom, is rusting, or jams every week after years of use is usually worth replacing. Plumber 24 Fort Worth repairs, replaces and installs garbage disposals across Fort Worth from our base at 955 N Sylvania Ave in Riverside, and we'll tell you plainly which option makes sense.

Repair or replace? Start with what it's doing

It hums but won't spin

Something is wedged in the grinding plate, often a fruit pit, a bottle cap or a bit of bone. Switch it off, then unplug it or turn off its breaker. Many models have a hex socket in the center of the bottom: work a 1/4-inch Allen wrench back and forth there to free the plate, lift out loose debris with tongs (never your hand), then press the reset button. If it still only hums, the motor may be seized, which usually means replacement.

It makes no sound at all

Press the red reset button on the bottom; it trips when the motor overheats. Then check the breaker and any GFCI outlet under the sink. Still silent? It's the switch, the cord or the motor, and a quick diagnosis tells us which.

It's leaking

  • At the sink flange (top): the seal has failed. We reseal the flange and tighten the mount.
  • At the drain or dishwasher hose (side): usually a worn gasket or a loose clamp. Repairable.
  • From the bottom of the unit: the internal seals have failed. Not worth repairing; leave it unplugged and replace it.

Water somewhere else under the sink? Ask us about sink repair.

It's time for a new one if it:

  • leaks from the body, or the housing is rusting
  • jams or trips the reset every week or two
  • grinds slowly and leaves chunks behind
  • is past about 10 years old and struggling (most last roughly 8 to 15 years)

Choosing a replacement: horsepower and features

Match the motor to your household and the space under your sink. Bigger isn't automatically better.

Motor size Best for Worth knowing
1/3 HP 1–2 people, light use Lowest cost; jams more easily, runs louder
1/2 HP Small households, everyday scraps Common builder-grade size
3/4 HP Families who cook most days Handles tougher scraps, usually quieter; right for most homes
1 HP Large households, heavy cooking Biggest and heaviest; needs cabinet room
  • Stainless grinding parts resist rust, and better sound insulation helps in open kitchens.
  • Batch-feed units only run with the cover in place: safer around children, but slower than the usual continuous-feed type.
  • Brand: major brands include InSinkErator, Waste King and Moen. Switching brands usually means a new sink flange and mount, which we handle during the install.

What a proper installation includes

  • Sink flange sealed and the mount tight, so the top stays dry.
  • Drain and trap lined up at the right height and slope.
  • Dishwasher hookup: new disposals ship with a knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet. Leave it in and the dishwasher won't drain. The hose also needs a high loop or an air gap so sink water can't flow back.
  • Test: we run water and the dishwasher drain, and check every joint for drips before we leave.

Adding one with a new sink

A sink or countertop replacement is the easiest time to add or upgrade a disposal, because the drain is already apart. Planning a sink installation? Ask for the disposal at the same time.

Older homes near Riverside and Six Points

Many homes around Riverside, Oakhurst and Six Points date from the 1920s to the 1960s, and some still have old metal drain pipe behind the kitchen wall that has narrowed with buildup. If your sink keeps backing up, the line may be the problem, not the disposal. We check that before recommending a new unit; if the line is the issue, drain cleaning comes first.

On septic? Check first

Most homes inside Fort Worth city limits are on city sewer, but some properties on the edges of town use septic. A disposal adds food solids, so the tank needs pumping more often.

Before Thanksgiving: keep the disposal out of trouble

Plumbers call the day after Thanksgiving "Brown Friday," because kitchen sinks and disposals back up when a full house cooks for the holiday. (Thanksgiving is November 26 in 2026.) Most of those calls are avoidable:

  • No grease, gravy or turkey fat. Let it set in a can and throw it out.
  • No potato peels, rice, pasta or stuffing. Peels turn to paste and starches swell.
  • No celery, onion skins, corn husks, bones or turkey skin. They wrap around or jam the grinder.
  • Feed it slowly with cold water running, and keep the water on for about 15 seconds after.
  • Already jamming or slow? Get it checked before your guests arrive.

Garbage disposal FAQ

Is it worth repairing a garbage disposal?

Often, yes. A jam, a tripped reset button or a leak at the top or side is usually a quick fix that costs less than a new unit. If it leaks from the bottom, is rusting, or is over 10 years old and jamming often, replace it.

Why does my disposal hum but not spin?

Something is jammed in the grinding plate, or the motor has seized. With the power off, free the plate using a 1/4-inch Allen wrench in the socket underneath, then press the reset button. If it still hums, call us.

How long does a disposal installation take?

A like-for-like swap usually takes about an hour or two. A first-time install, a brand change that needs a new mount, or a new sink with a dishwasher hookup takes longer.

What size garbage disposal do I need?

For most families, 1/2 to 3/4 HP is right. A 1/3 HP unit suits light use, and 1 HP suits large households that cook a lot, if the cabinet has room.

Is a broken disposal an emergency?

Usually not. But if water is leaking into the cabinet or your kitchen sink is backing up and you can't stop it, call (817) 755-5621 any time; we handle emergencies 24/7. For everything else, we'll book you at a time that suits you.
