Call (817) 755-5621When an old drain line has rusted, cracked or collapsed, cleaning it again only buys time. We replace failing drain pipe in Fort Worth homes and businesses, and install new drains when a remodel moves a sink, adds a bathroom or turns a tub into a shower.
This page covers drain piping inside and under the building. The buried pipe out to the city sewer is covered under sewer line repair & replacement.
Cleaning, repair or replacement: which do you need?
- Drain cleaning clears a clog of grease, hair, wipes or roots from pipe that's still sound.
- Drain repair fixes one bad spot, such as a cracked fitting or a single broken length.
- Drain replacement replaces a run of pipe that has failed along its length: rusted through, flattened or broken in places.
- Drain installation adds new drain lines, sized, sloped and vented, where none existed before.
The deciding question is the pipe's condition, not the clog. A video camera inspection shows whether you have one bad joint or a line failing end to end.
Old drain pipe we replace in Fort Worth homes
Much of the housing around our Riverside base and in Oakhurst, Six Points and Northside dates from the 1920s to the 1960s, and Fairmount has many historic homes. Their original drains are near or past the end of their life.
Cast iron under floors and in walls
In these homes, many original drains under floors and inside walls are cast iron. Decades of rust leave scale that narrows the bore and snags paper, and cracks open along the bottom of horizontal runs. Once the wall has thinned along a whole run, cutting out one bad spot just exposes the next.
Slab movement in expansive clay
Under a slab, North Texas expansive clay swells when wet and shrinks in drought, and the slab moves with it. That can crack drain pipe or pull joints apart beneath the floor, out of sight until odor or repeat backups give it away.
Orangeburg and clay
Orangeburg, a fiber pipe of wood pulp and coal tar used from the 1940s into the 1970s, softens, flattens and collapses with age and can't be fixed in place. Clay and Orangeburg mostly run in the buried line to the street (sewer work); where they meet new drain pipe, they're replaced too.
Galvanized steel drains
Galvanized drain pipe, found at kitchen sinks, laundry boxes and vents in some older homes, rusts closed from the inside; a drain that stays slow after every cleaning may be out of room.
Signs your drain needs replacing, not another cleaning
- The same line backs up again within weeks or months of each cleaning
- A camera shows rust holes, flattened pipe or broken joints along one run
- Sewer odor indoors with no dry trap or clog to explain it
- Earlier fixes on the same run: patched spots or several couplings close together
- Cracked or weeping cast iron visible in a crawlspace or garage
One sign alone doesn't mean a full replacement. Several together usually do.
New drain installation for remodels and additions
Remodels often move fixtures. Each new drain has to be sized for its fixture, sloped so solids keep moving, vented so traps don't siphon dry, and tied in where the system can take the extra flow. Common jobs:
- Moving a kitchen sink to an island or new wall (sink installation)
- Converting a tub to a walk-in shower, which usually moves the drain (shower installation)
- Adding a bathroom, toilet or wet bar (toilet installation, fixture installation)
- Relocating a washer or adding a floor drain
- Business build-outs with new restrooms and prep sinks (commercial plumbing)
With floors or walls open, it's the best time to replace old cast iron the new lines connect to.
How a drain replacement works
- Inspect. A camera shows the pipe's condition and where the failed section starts and stops.
- Plan the access. In pier-and-beam houses, like many in Fairmount, old drains can often be reached from the crawlspace; under a slab, by cutting the floor or tunneling beneath it.
- Replace. Failed pipe comes out and new pipe, typically Schedule 40 PVC, goes in at the correct slope, joined to the remaining pipe with transition couplings.
- Test and confirm. New piping is leak-checked before it's covered, then fixtures are run to confirm drainage.
Replacing or adding drain piping usually needs a plumbing permit and inspection through Fort Worth's Development Services department; ask about it when you get your quote.

Drain installation & replacement FAQ
What's the difference between drain repair and drain replacement?
+
Repair fixes one bad spot, like a cracked fitting. Replacement swaps a whole run that has failed along its length. A camera inspection shows which your line needs.
Can you replace only part of a drain line?
+
Often, yes. If the damage is limited to one run, only that section is replaced. If the old pipe is failing throughout, patching one spot usually just moves the next failure down the line.
How do I know if my house has cast iron, clay or Orangeburg drains?
+
Age is the first clue: Fort Worth homes built from the 1920s to the 1960s often have cast-iron drains under the floor, with clay or Orangeburg more often in the buried line to the street. A camera inspection confirms the material and condition.
Do I need new drain lines for a kitchen or bathroom remodel?
+
If a sink, toilet, shower or washer moves, yes. Each new location needs a correctly sized, sloped and vented drain, tied into pipe that's in good shape.
