What counts as a plumbing emergency?

It's an emergency when it's damaging your home right now, putting someone at risk, or leaving you without water or a working toilet. Call right away for:

  • A burst pipe, or any leak you can't stop
  • Sewage coming up in a tub, shower or floor drain, or several drains backing up at once
  • A gas smell (like rotten eggs) or hissing near a gas line or appliance (leave first, then call from outside)
  • A water heater leaking from the tank
  • No water anywhere in the house
  • An overflowing toilet when it's your only one

A dripping faucet, one slow drain, a running toilet or no hot water (with no leak) can usually wait for a booked visit. Not sure? Call and we'll help you decide.

What happens when you call

  1. Safety first. Is anyone in danger? Is water or gas leaking?
  2. We talk you through the shut-off (steps below).
  3. We send the on-call plumber right away for an emergency and give you an arrival estimate.
  4. Not urgent? We book you at the time that suits you.

You'll hear any after-hours fee before we send anyone. Our coupons include a $0 dispatch fee with repair.

What to do while you wait

Shut off the water

Most Fort Worth homes have two shut-off points:

  • The house valve, where the water line enters the house: near a front or side hose bib, in the garage, or under a pier-and-beam house. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.
  • The meter box near the street or sidewalk. Use the valve on the house side of the meter (a meter key or large wrench helps). A leak on the city side is Fort Worth Water's to fix, so call the city.

In older Riverside, Oakhurst and Fairmount homes, the house valve may be an old gate valve that has seized. Don't force it; use the meter box.

For a leak at one fixture, close the stop valves under the sink or behind the toilet.

Turn off the water heater

If the tank is leaking, close the cold-water valve at the top of the tank. Then switch off the breaker (electric) or turn the knob to "Pilot" (gas). Smell gas? Don't touch it; get out. Don't drain it yourself; the water can be scalding.

If you smell gas

Leave the building now and get everyone out. Don't look for the leak, flip switches or light anything. Once outside, call 911 or Atmos Energy's emergency line.

Once Atmos has made it safe, call us. We find and fix the leak, whether it's corroded pipe, a worn appliance connector or a damaged yard line. The line then needs a pressure test and a City of Fort Worth inspection before Atmos turns the gas back on. See gas line repair.

The emergencies we see most in Fort Worth

Burst and frozen pipes

Burst pipes arrive with the first hard freezes. DFW's average first freeze is around November 22; the earliest on record was October 22. Attic lines, garage walls, hose bibs and crawl spaces freeze first, and a frozen pipe often doesn't leak until it thaws.

Many 1920s–60s houses around Riverside and Oakhurst still have galvanized supply pipes, which rust from the inside and can split in any season. We replace the damaged section and check the rest of the line. See our frozen pipes guide.

Sewer backups

If sewage comes up a drain, stop using water in the whole house: no flushing, showers, laundry or dishwasher. Keep kids and pets away. When more than one drain backs up, the clog is usually in the main sewer line.

Many older homes near our shop have cast-iron or clay sewers, where tree roots and cracked joints cause many main-line clogs. Skip chemical drain openers; they rarely clear a main line. We clear it and can run a camera inspection to show you the cause. See drain cleaning and sewer line repair.

Leaking water heater or no hot water

Water that keeps pooling around the base usually means the tank is failing. Shut it down as above and call. If it needs replacing, note that Fort Worth requires a permit, even for a like-for-like swap.

No hot water but no leak? Check the breaker or pilot; if that doesn't fix it, book a water heater repair. Smell gas near the heater? Don't relight it; get out and call from outside.

Emergency plumbing FAQs

What happens if I call after 11 PM?

Call (817) 755-5621. For a burst pipe, a gas smell, sewage backing up or water you can't shut off, we send our on-call plumber right away and talk you through shutting off the water while they're on the way. Smell gas? Get out and call 911 or Atmos Energy from outside first. Not urgent? We'll book you at the time that suits you.

How fast can you get to me?

When you call, we give you an arrival estimate for your address; Riverside, Oakhurst and Six Points are closest to our shop.

Do you charge extra after hours?

We tell you any after-hours fee on the phone before the plumber is sent. Current offers, including a $0 dispatch fee with repair, are on our coupons page.

What should I do while I wait for the plumber?

Shut off the water at the house valve or meter box, then turn off the water heater. Move valuables out of the water and take photos for insurance. If you smell gas, leave first and call 911 or Atmos Energy from outside.

Do you handle gas emergencies?

Yes, once the area is safe. Leave the house and call 911 or Atmos Energy from outside; Atmos shuts off the gas and makes it safe. Then we find and repair the leak, and the line has to pass a pressure test and city inspection before Atmos restores service.
